Adult Basic Education

Adult Basic Education If someone you know has difficulty with reading, writing, and math or has difficulty speaking English because it is not his or her primary language, we can help. Tutors provide one-to-one instruction based on the individual student's needs. This program is confidential. This program is FREE to residents of Lisbon and Durham. Students may enroll at any time, with day and evening sessions available. Call 353-3037 to enroll.

GED Diploma Testing FREE

Examiners: Sue Gerlek, Pat Evanisko and  Joni Sloan
The GED is a state equivalency diploma, which may be earned by passing a five-part exam in the areas of language arts-writing, language arts-reading, social studies, science, and mathematics.  A GED can open the door to further education and can improve employment possibilities.  STUDENTS MUST BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OF AGE TO BEGIN TESTING. Enroll anytime. Accommodations in testing are available for adults with documented physical disabilities as well as learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and emotional or psychological disabilities. Each request is considered on an individual basis. Students interested in applying for accommodations should contact the Adult Education Office at 353-3037.

GED Orientation FREE

Orientation sessions are held on Thursdays. Students unable to attend on Thursdays should contact the Adult Education Office 353-3037 for an alternative. You are required to bring a government issued photo identification card to the orientation session.

GED Preparation FREE

Instructor: Anita Marenius
Prepare for the writing, reading, or any other section of the GED pre-test causing concern.  Gain confidence and skills permitting you to pass ALL sections of the GED exam.   Enroll anytime.

High School Diploma Program

The high school diploma program is open to adults who are 17 years old or older. Students earn credits by taking academic and vocational courses. Students must meet state and local requirements to earn a diploma. Any credits earned in high school or at other adult education programs may be applied towards earning high school diploma credit. To enroll in the program students much make an appointment to meet with the Adult Education Director.

Accounting

The students in this accounting course will be introduced to accounting concepts and terminology, how to maintain journals and the general ledger, and how to prepare basic financial statements.  This course is ideal for beginners and for people who are looking for a refresher course.

Algebra I

Instructor:  Lou Sullivan
This course provides a basic foundation in Algebra including equations and inequalities, polynomials, rational expressions, ratio and proportion, graphing techniques, linear equations, variables, and problem solving techniques.  Students are encouraged to bring a spiral notebook.  Begins: Thurs. 1/17, 15 weeks

Biology with Lab

Instructor: Paul Halle
This activity oriented course deals with the study of life.  All major biological concepts including cells, reproduction, genetics, evolution, plants, invertebrates and vertebrae animals, along with human biology
will be explored.  Biology with lab is a fast paced offering that will satisfy requirements for most post-secondary schools including those in the medical field.  Call Merrymeeting Adult Ed. to enroll 729-7323.

Chemistry with Lab

Instructor:  Allen Irish
An interesting adventure into general chemistry including the study of the atom, elements, electron configuration, gases and their laws. This is a laboratory practice class and will satisfy entrance requirements for post-secondary schools and CNA preparation. College Math Refresher

This course reviews basic math including basic arithmetic, decimals and percents, and fractions.  This course is intended for adults who are preparing for college entrance tests or who need a math refresher class for employment.

Physics with Lab

Instructor:  Joyce Kennedy
This course provides an overview of Physics, including motion, energy, light, sound, electricity, magnetism, and atomic and nuclear physics.  Basic math skills including using formulas and graphs will be reviewed as necessary.  This is a lab practice class designed for anyone who needs Physics to meet a college prerequisite requirement.  Algebra I is highly recommended.  Physics is required as a pre-requisite for the following pot-secondary programs of study which are available through the Community College System and other institutions: Machine Tool Technology, Architectural and Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Occupational Health and Safety, Radiological Technology, and Nuclear Medicine Technology.

Plato Learning Lab

Instructors:  Christina Milazzo and Travis Crafts
Plato is a computer-managed learning system.  It offers individualized, self-paced, modules of study in math, reading, writing, science, GED preparation and other areas.  The Plato Learning Lab is an ideal way to refresh your knowledge and skills in a particular subject or to prepare for college placement tests or employment test.  A teacher is available to assist you.  Plato is a flexible learning system and is ideal for students who need time flexibility to meet educational goals. To register call the Adult Education office at 353-3037.

Pre-Algebra

This course continues where Refresher Math I has left off.  It includes formulas and word problems, ratios, probability, proportions, exponents order of operations, solving equations and basic introduction to geometry.  This course is designed to prepare students to take Algebra I.

Survey of English Literature

This course will use fiction, both classic and contemporary, to explore themes including overcoming obstacles and the search for meaning and identity.  This class will include comparing and contrasting classical and modern works.

This class is intended for students who have no experience with a computer.  This class will teach very simple keyboarding techniques and how to use a computer mouse.  After completing this course students are ready for the Computers for Beginners class.

Computerized Keyboarding I

Introduction to POWERPOINT

One of the most versatile and fun elements of the Microsoft Office suite is PowerPoint. Learn how to use PowerPoint to create slideshow presentations, graphic illustrations, posters, and amusing notes and letters. Some keyboarding experience, basic computer literacy, and knowledge of Windows are required.

Introduction to Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is the most popular word processing program available today. It is widely used in businesses and on home computers. In this class students will learn all the basics needed to prepare, edit and print documents. A basic knowledge of computers is recommended for this course.

Quickbooks Pro

Instructor:  Bill Bauer
QuickBooks is a “user-friendly” accounting system for small business.  This course is designed for the non-accountant and will teach students how to utilize the Quickbooks software for their individual needs.  Topics will include creating financial categories, accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing and monthly or year-end reports.  Basic computer literacy is required.

Basics of E-Commerce

Participants will learn the basics of e-commerce: how web sites and search engines work, how to register a domain name, and how a website can enhance the overall business model. Participants will also learn about easy to use web site templates and where to go for more assistance.

Certificate Programs

Three Certificate Programs are offered for adults who are seeking to improve technology skills. This program requires the satisfactory completion of a minimum of 100 hours of study. On Line courses may be used to earn certificates. Each on-line course earns 25 hours towards a certificate. Adults interested in participating must register for the certificate program in the Adult Education Office.

Certificate in Professional Office Skills

This program is designed for adults who are seeking office employment as an administrative assistant or secretary, as well as those who are presently working in an office setting who would like to enhance their skills. Completion of this certificate requires a proficiency in keyboarding and 100 hours of study, which may include any computer class, administrative assistant fundamentals, administrative assistant application, and Effective Business Writing.

Certificate in Computer Technology

This certificate program is designed for adults who seek to improve their employment skills by studying widely used computer software programs. Any computer course may be taken as part of this program. A total of 100 hours of study is required to earn the certificate. Courses may be taken at introductory, intermediate or advanced levels. Course of study may include computer applications, web design and graphics, PC Troubleshooting, Networking and Security, or Data Base Management.

Accounting Skills Certificate

This certificate is designed for adults who currently work in the financial services industry and those who would like to gain valuable accounting skills. A total of 100 hours of study is required to earn this certificate. The following courses are required for this certificate: Accounting I, Accounting II, QuickBooks, and Introduction to Excel. Students may select other elective courses from a wide selection of available classroom and online courses.

Creating Your Business Website

Instructor: Marita Fairfield, Coastal Enterprises, Inc.
Participants will learn how to use a simple and FREE web page editor Mozilla Composer to either create their own website or edit an HTML website created by someone else. This workshop is conducted in a computer lab and participants will gain hands-on experience.

Electricity I - DC Circuits

The Electricity I course, (DC Circuits) will equip the student with the three types of circuit configurations, electrical schematics, electrical safety, electrical measuring equipment and ohms law calculations. Certificate accepted by Maine State Electrical Licensing Board will be issued upon completion of course.

Electrical Blueprint Reading

Instructor: Jim Dunnington
This course will introduce the student to the process of drafting and interpreting electrical blueprints. The student will learn to use TurboCad as a drafting tool to create electrical blueprints. Using TurboCad, the student will create electrical blueprints, using approved and standard electrical trade symbols. The focus of the prints will be residential, commercial and industrial. A certificate accepted by the Maine State Electrical Licensing Board will be issued upon completion of this course.

Substitute Teaching

Have you considered subbing in the school system, but were hesitant because of a lack of training? If so, this class is for you! An overview of the daily procedures of Lisbon's schools will be presented, as well as disciplinary techniques and approaches to make you an effective substitute. A tour of the Union 30 schools will be part of this course to make participants more comfortable. Certificates will be issued upon completion.

A Birds and Flowers program will take place at Beaver Park on May 31st from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Those interested in attending the bird watch should meet Stan DeOrsey at 7:30 a.m. at the Beaver Park bulletin board.  The bird program will start at 7:30 a.m. and end at 9:30 a.m.  Susan Hayward will lead the wild plant walk starting at 9:30 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m.  Verla Brooks will be available throughout the morning for Beaver Park tours or to answer questions pertaining to Beaver Park.

Decorative Painting Classes

Instructor:  Marge Otis
You will learn techniques, such as seal, base coating, shading, and hi-lighting and will finish a project.  Students need to bring only basic brushes for acrylics and a water well.  Paints, project piece and other supplies will be provided for class use.  This is a step-by-step process and does not require art experience.  If you have questions about brush types call Marge at 725-2560. Material lists are available for all classes.

Essentials of Creative Thinking

Get in the Valentine’s Day mood by joining this fun workshop.  Handcrafting valentines is a longtime tradition.  All materials will be provided.  Make as many valentines as you would like.

May Basket
May 1st is celebrated as May Day.  It is a festival to celebrate spring and a day to make and give May baskets to families and friends.  We will be making our own baskets in different designs and flowers to go in them.  Come have fun with us to start the season off right and make someone happy.

Four Needle Mittens

Instructor:  Verla Brooks
Learn to knit mittens using four needles.  It is fun and easy.  You must have basic knitting skills.  For those knitters who want a challenge the instructor will teach them to knit double-knit mittens with a design.  Materials needed are one skein of wool-ease worsted weight yarn and a set of four, size 3 or 4 double pointed knitting needles. Hospice and Bereavement Volunteer Training

Indoor Walking

When the streets get icy you can still walk for exercise. The gym at the former Lisbon Elementary School will be open for indoor walking two mornings a week. No need to register, just show up with your walking shoes.

Intermediate Fly Tying

This is a class designed to teach students that already have the basic skills and techniques needed for discovering the exciting world of fly tying.  The flies that will be tied are slightly more difficult than in the beginner class.  There is nothing more gratifying than catching a fish on a fly you hand tied.  All equipment and materials will be provided for your use.  Students are also encouraged to bring any of their own vices and tools if they have them.

Maple Sugar House Tour

Flying Geese Blocks

Bobbinwork/Couching

Technique class only.   This class will allow you to experiment with all kinds of decorator threads, yarns, and cording.  Just because it’s too thick to fit through the needle, doesn’t mean you can’t sew with it.  Have you tried to put it in the bobbin???  Come learn these two techniques for embellishing.

Basics of Thread Painting

It’s like “painting by numbers” – only by thread!  Make a striking embroidered appliqué with rayon and metallic threads.  A fabric motif is tread-painted using Freemotion stitching.  Knowledge of Freemotion stitching is recommended.  Sewing machine required.   Must have spring needle or darning/specialty Freemotion foot!

String Pieced LeMoyne Star Quilt

Stained Glass

No bias strips and NOT reverse appliqué!!  In this class you’ll make a 15” square floral design by simply appliquéing colored fabric onto black fabric leaving irregular spaces in between the colors exposing the back “lead” lines.   Beginner friendly.  Sewing machine recommended if choose to stitch in class.  Or come make top and learn how to stitch and complete at home.

BASIC Beginner Quilting Class

Readers Anonymous – A Book Club for the Incurable Reader

A great way to meet new people is to join a book club.  If you love to read and talk about books Readers Anonymous offers a great opportunity to enjoy a night out with good company and conversation.  The club meets on the fourth Thursday of each month.  Books are chosen by the members of the club.  Each meeting features lively discussion and lots of fun.  Members borrow the books from libraries or purchase their own books.  Only books available in paperback are chosen as a monthly selection.  You may join the club at any meeting by simply attending.  Newcomers are welcome to attend a meeting to get acquainted before reading the book selection.  The selection for January 31 is  Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

Writing Fiction
